Shut the Box Doubles Rules: What Happens on a Pair?

In our version of Shut the Box, doubles are an ordinary roll. Add both dice and close an available combination with that total. A pair does not grant a bonus, reopen tiles, or let you use one tile twice.

Treat a pair as one total

A roll of 3 and 3 gives you a target of 6. If open, tile 6 is legal. So are 1+5, 2+4 and 1+2+3. You choose a complete combination that sums to 6, then close it once.

You cannot choose 3+3 because a standard board has only one tile numbered 3. The fact that two dice show the same face does not create a second copy of the matching tile. This is the same distinct-tile restriction used for every other roll.

Walk through the possible pairs

DiceTargetExample legal choice, if open
1 + 122
2 + 241 + 3
3 + 362 + 4
4 + 483 + 5
5 + 5101 + 9
6 + 6123 + 9

These are examples, not recommended optimal moves or a complete list. On a twelve-tile board, a roll of 12 can also close tile 12 itself. On a nine-tile board, you must combine other available numbers.

A double can still end the round

Suppose only 7 and 9 remain open and you roll double 4. The target is 8, but neither tile is 8 and their sum is 16. There is no legal move, so the round ends at 16 points.

This example uses two dice because high tiles remain open. If only 4 and 5 remained, our game would already have switched to one die, so rolling a double would not be possible at that stage.

Do doubles give you another roll?

After any successful move, you roll again under our rules. A double does not add an extra reroll on top of that normal continuation. If you fail to match the dice, you cannot reroll because the faces happened to match each other.

Some groups may choose special pair rules for a physical game. Write down what a pair does before you start. A rule taken from another dice game does not automatically apply to Shut the Box, and this website has no doubles-bonus setting.

Check the whole combination before confirming

When a pair appears, first read the total, then list the open tiles. Repeating a face value is an easy mistake if you think in terms of the two separate dice. Instead, write one addition using each selected tile at most once.

For practice, try the legal-combination examples and the scoring guide. They follow the same principle: the roll defines the target, the board limits the available numbers, and the open sum determines the final score.
