THE LITTLE DICE CLUB

Make each roll count

A legal move gets you through this roll. A good choice also leaves ways to handle the next one. No strategy can guarantee a win.

Start with the actual legal moves

You may only close open tiles whose total matches the dice. A roll of 8 with 1, 3, 5 and 8 open gives you a choice between 8 and 3+5. Compare the boards those choices leave instead of choosing the first combination you see.

Small tiles offer flexibility

Low numbers can form several totals. An open 1 can combine with many other tiles, so preserving it is often useful. This is a heuristic, not a proof that the smallest tile should always remain open.

Watch the switch to one die

On this site, closing the last tile above 6 changes the next roll to one die. That die can only roll 1–6. If you then leave 4 and 5 open, you cannot close both with a roll of 9, but you can still close them separately with 4 and 5.

Know what you are optimizing

Minimizing your expected remaining score and maximizing your chance of closing every tile are different objectives. A move that removes a large number now is not automatically the best move for either goal. Exact optimal advice needs a solver that evaluates future states under the chosen rules.

Use our hints as a combination check

The single-player “Show a combination” button cycles through legal options. It does not rank them or calculate an optimal strategy. Try your own choice, then use the hint to see whether you overlooked a combination.

Practice with the daily dice

The daily challenge gives everyone the same sequence of dice pairs on a nine-tile board. Replay it to compare choices. Once you reach the one-die stage, only the first die of each pair is used. A different decision may therefore change later totals.

Keep comparisons fair

Compare results using the same board size, dice rule and scoring method. Friend-room dice are generated by the server for each roll; different players do not receive an identical dice sequence.
